Richard R. Reed, D.D.S.,M.S.
Dick was born in Burlington, Vermont, attended the Burlington Schools and the University of Vermont. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After graduation in 1963 he served as a dentist in the United States Navy during the Viet Nam War. He was accepted to SUNY at Buffalo, received his certificate in Orthodontics and continued on to get a Master of Science degree from the graduate school.

In 1967, he opened Champlain Orthodontic Associates in Burlington. This practice has grown to four offices and four additional orthodontists.

Dick has been a member of the State of Vermont Cleft Palate and Cranial Facial Team for the past thirty-years and has an appointment to the University of Vermont School of Medicine where he teaches in the dental residency program.

Dick is board certified as a Diplomat by the American Board of Orthodontics. He served for six years as secretary of the Vermont State Dental Society and is a past president of the Vermont Association of Orthodontists and the Champlain Dental Society. Recently he was inducted as a fellow in the International College of Dentists.

In the past years, he has donated his time to travel to foreign countries with the Global Health Outreach Team to lecture and teach in the field of orthodontics.

Dick lives in South Burlington with his wife Barbara. He enjoys skiing, golf, boating and spending time with his four children and seven grandchildren.


J. Peter Sande, D.D.S.
Peter is a native of Syracuse, NY and did his undergraduate studies at SUNY at Buffalo. He received his Doctorate in dentistry from the same University in 1969.

As a Harvard clinical resident at Boston Children’s Hospital from 1969 through 1971, he specialized and became certified in pediatric dentistry. From 1971-1973, Peter was in charge of the dependent dental care in the army at the Fort Sill army post in Lawton, Oklahoma.

For his second post-doctoral matriculation, Peter specialized in orthodontics for two years at the New Jersey College of Medicine in Dentistry. Following his time in New Jersey, he moved to Vermont and joined Dr. Dick Reed’s orthodontic practice in Burlington and St. Albans in 1975.

Peter is a member of several professional organizations, including the Champlain Valley Dental Society, Vermont Association of Orthodontists, the Northeast Society of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists, Vermont State Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He is a past President of the Champlain Valley Dental Society and the Vermont Association of Orthodontists.

Peter resides in Shelburne, VT with his wife and two sons. Skiing, golf and boating are a few of the activities he enjoys with his family.


Barrett G. Peterson, D.M.D.
Barrett graduated from Montpelier High School in 1978. His love for fly-fishing, canoeing, camping, skiing and hockey kept him in the northeast as he pursued his undergraduate education at St. Lawrence University. Barrett received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1982.

Barrett met his wife and classmate, Mary, at St. Lawrence and they were married after graduation. In Boston, Mary pursued a degree in law while Barrett began his dental training at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

Barrett received his doctoral degree in 1986 and started a dental residency program at the Fernald School for the handicapped, Lemual Shattuck Hospital, Boston City Hospital, and New England Medical Center.

In 1987, Barrett returned to Tufts for his two-year orthodontic residency program. In 1989 he moved back to Vermont with his wife and their four-month old daughter to join Champlain Orthodontic Associates. Barrett and Mary have now been married 23 years and have 4 children.

Barrett remains active in the dental community. He served as past Secretary to the Vermont State Dental Society Executive Board and was past President of the Champlain Valley Dental Society. In February 2001 he achieved the Status of Diplomat, American Board of Orthodontics.

Barrett maintains his volunteer participation as a hockey coach for CSB hockey, and has been an active member of the Jay Peak Ski Patrol for the last twelve years. Barrett is currently a Board member with the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association.


Daniel J. Ryan Jr., D.D.S., M.S.
Dan was born in Buffalo, NY and raised nearby in the small town of Alden. After graduating from high school, he attended St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. In 1996, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While enrolled at SJFC, Dan was a member of the Football team. Dan attended Dental School at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2000. He was the President of the American Student Dental Association and was inducted into the OKU Dental Society. Dan continued his training at SUNY at Buffalo for his certificate to specialize in Orthodontics and his Masters of Science in 2002.

Dan stays very active within his profession. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Northeast Society of Orthodontics, Vermont Association of Orthodontics, Vermont State Dental Society, and the Champlain Valley Dental Society. Dan has served as the Vice-President and President for the CVDS organization (2007 and 2008). In 2005, Dr. Ryan became a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Dan and his wife, Chantal, currently reside in Essex Junction. They moved to Vermont in 2003 to join Champlain Orthodontics. They have a daughter, Grace, who was born in December of 2005. Both enjoy traveling, camping, and the outdoors. Dan spends much of his leisure time hiking, snowboarding, fly-fishing, and golfing.


Brian S. McLellan, D.M.D
Brian was born in Boston, MA. He attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA. In 1987 he received his B.S. in Chemistry. He pursued research interests at Tufts Medical School. Brian pursued graduate studies at UVM where he met his wife Anne.

Brian received his doctoral degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2003. He completed his Certificate of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Eastman Dental Center at the University of Rochester in 2005.

Brian is active in his profession. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Northeast Society of Orthodontics, Vermont Association of Orthodontics, Vermont State Dental Society, Champlain Valley Dental Society, and The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Brian and his wife Anne have two young children. They enjoy outdoor activities: canoeing, swimming.
